This was the beginning. I hadn't written songs for myself in a long time, though I did a lot of that, back in my twenties. I wasn't even sure I could do it, anymore, to my own satisfaction. But, I went at it like going at a new painting, and I think it turned out alright.
This Spring (2020), while having some extra time at home (with my wife at home, too, to help with the kids!), I cleaned out the garden in our backyard, and I turned some 300 square feet of dirt by hand, and I planted wildflowers. This was the first time I had done that. I'm not much of a gardener, but I do know that the key to a good garden is well-prepared soil. The better the soil, the better the result. As this song says, "You gotta dig..."
This song remembers a time in the past when I helped my ex-wife garden, and, as grateful as I am for some of the things she taught me about gardening, it wasn't a very healthy relationship. This action, this year, of digging a new garden, also meant digging up old memories. Over time, interestingly enough, the digging got easier. I hope your digging gets easier, too.
lyrics
"...Will all this working ever pay?
Is the effort worth the planting?..."
"...I need the brown
Everything brown
No green right now..."
