This Year 05:52
"This year, we discovered the bunnies This year, we discovered the dirt. It was all there, out in our back garden But this year, we return to the earth. Together apart. we'll make it together. But gathered, alone, selfish we'll fall. It's all become weird. The whole world is backwards. But it's not the time to lose our resolve..."
3.
Dark Island 05:03
"...I live on a dark island And if you ever come to visit, You'd better bring a torch Cause I've got no fire left inside me..." "...And I'm waiting in the dark, And I'm waiting for a spark From you..." "...I don't have any fire, but what I've got left is trees. Trees with roots that go down To the place below the sea..."

5.
"...I'm falling apart - and I'm not even in prison But my grief is concrete And my ego is iron And my suburban dream, has become solitary..." "...Usually it's people who hold me together Like rubber bands stretched around a fragile piece of paper But all the nails have rusted out of this termite eaten toolshed And now it's just me standing here..."
6.
"...I dig with the one and I play with the other... but which is which and who is who?..." "...If I play hard and if I dig hard, can I dig all the way through this cruel cruel world?..."
7.
"...This lonely city was once full of people Now we stay at home This lonely city was once full of people But now all the elders have gone..." "...We look to the one who is We look to the one who was We look to the one who is to come How long, how long?"
8.
"...Nobody's there to give you a hug. (So sad.) Nobody's there to hear your point of view. (Too bad.) Nobody's there to see you dance. (So sad.) Nobody's there to criticize your moves. (Oh yeah!) (My hair wants) more music! More music! More music! More music! ...(Don't you cut that hair!)..."
9.
"...will you wait? Will you wait for your mama? Cause after all She's waited on you. She's waited on you Like an overworked waitress. She's waited on you Like the cook. She's waited on you Like that underpaid busboy. No wonder you miss the restaurant..."
10.
"...The raccoon babies have called up the moon. Come on! Lose your reality. The sun's come out from inside of your room. Come on! Lose your reality..." "...Loneliness is overrated. Helplessness is set on fire. Mindfulness springs eternal. Find inside your holy choir..." "...The goose outside is moving on in. Come on! Lose your reality. You can't really lose and you can't really win. Come on! Lose your reality..."

"That night I heard the thunder As I slept in the branches..." "...Like a three legged hamster in the wheel of life Keeps getting tired but then starts up again.."

about

This album represents the artistic work I've been doing during this pandemic (2020). For some reason, it struck me as important to write, record, and self-produce a new music album as I have worked through my own feelings about being more isolated from the world during pandemic times. Listening to original music from my friends has been a big help. I hope these songs might help you, too.

I am very proud of this work. In this album, I have taken some of the skills I have learned as a painter and sculptor, and applied them to writing and recording original songs. Each track was recorded by me, alone, usually in the back of my van, in the garage while my kids napped, with me playing all of the instruments involved. In that way, I think it's a good representation of being physically distant during this pandemic, and not spreading the virus around.

This album uses analog instruments, like djembe, guitar, acoustic bass, vocals, although these instruments were recorded and edited digitally. It was nice to get my hands on something real and raw, and in places, I think you can hear that on the album.

Like many artworks, this album took a while to get together, so the themes may seem a little dated. Back when I wrote these things, most of us were still on the same page, staying home and keeping distance. It was timely at the time when it was written, but things have changed oh so quickly. However, most of these songs still ring true to me, and I hope they help you, too. Enjoy!
